The Specialized Medical Standards team
Specialized Medical Standards (SMS) operates as a small but mighty team to deliver the best medical training for austere and remote conditions. Utilizing a network of international subject-matter experts, we develop curriculum and an online resources for our licensed partners to deploy for their clients.
The Prolonged Field Care Collective (PFCC) is also powered by SMS. Since 2014, PFCC has been the leader in bringing relevant digital content to SOF medics and clinicians working in austere environments around the world.
Dr. Sean Keenan
CEO & Medical Director – SMS
Sean is a Board-certified Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services physician with over 25 years of experience in emergency, prehospital and operational medicine. He was the original coordinator of the Prolonged Field Care Working Group and has served on the board of the Special Operations Medical Association for over 5 years. He works as a consultant for the Joint Trauma System, Defense Health Agency, and the University of Colorado, and as Chief Medical Officer for Ragged Edge Solutions, LLC. He also serves as the Chief Executive Officer for SMS, and Chair of the International Committee for Austere Emergency Care.
Emma Mitchell
Marketing & Communications – SMS
Emma has a background in marketing, customer relationship management, and event planning for non-profits and small businesses. She has been working with SMS since early 2021, and enjoys being part of the effort to bring awareness to this life-saving education.
Dr. Jamie Riesberg
Strategy & Curriculum Development – SMS
Jamie is board certified in family medicine and recently retired after 24 years in the US Army. He held many positions throughout his military career to include: Special Operations Resuscitation Team physician, Robinson Special Warfare Medical Group Course Director, 10th Special Forces Group Surgeon, and the 1st Special Forces Command Surgeon. Jamie has also participated in and chaired numerous committees including the Special Operations Medical Association’s Prolonged Field Care Committee, the Tactical Combat Casualty Care Committee and the Department of Defense Joint Trauma System Prolonged Casualty Care Subcommittee. He served as an Assistant Professor of Military Medicine at Uniformed Services University, instructing field medical training for 2nd and 3rd year medical students. Jamie assists with curriculum development and strategy at SMS, and also serves as Director of Military Medicine at Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine in Billings, Montana.
Dennis Jarema
Podcast Host – PFCC
Currently serving as a Special Forces Medical Sergeant, Dennis Jarema also holds credentials as a Registered Nurse. He is renowned as the host of the globally acclaimed Prolonged Field Care Podcast and teaches at the Special Forces Medical Sergeant Surgical Skills Sustainment Course (SFMSSSC). With several years of experience, Dennis has operated in combat zones and imparted his knowledge or austere medicine to students from diverse countries and backgrounds. He is also seeking a Masters degree in Austere Critical Care from the College of Remote and Offshore Medicine.
Paul Loos
Writer & Website Developer – PFCC
Paul Loos is a retired US Army Special Forces Medical Sergeant. He is the Vice President of Special Projects at Ragged Edge Solutions LLC. During his 20 year career he was assigned to 1st Special Forces Command at Fort Bragg, NC as the NCOIC of the Non-Standard Medical Detachment in the Office of Special Warfare where he ran the Special Operations Forces Austere Care Course and the Regional Support Medic Course. Prior to that he was the Chief Instructor for the inaugural Special Forces Medical Sergeant Skills Sustainment Course at the Special Warfare Center and School’s Joint Special Operations Medical Training Center. He deployed to Africa multiple times while assigned to 10th Special Forces Group on Operation Detachment Alpha 0211. Before graduating the Special Forces Qualification Course SFC Loos was a 68W Combat Medic with multiple deployments to Iraq as an Infantry and Scout Medic. He is the author of the Joint Trauma System Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) on Prehospital Documentation in Prolonged Field Care Settings and has also co-authored other Prolonged Field Care CPGs including “TBI Management in PFC.” He is a member of the Special Operations Medical Association and is the founder and Editor of the website, www.ProlongedFieldCare.org where he has authored many additional resources for Medics working in austere environments.
